Teaching & Learning: Class Routines

By Lisa Sacristani, Head of School (7-9)

During 2023-2024, all staff participated in Berry Street Education Model (BSEM) training. BSEM is a teaching and learning framework designed to support student success through trauma-informed practices, positive psychology, and evidence-based learning strategies.

Last year, secondary school teachers and students provided feedback to the BSEM working party about their classroom experiences. Key insights included:

  • Students learn best when staff maintain consistent class routines
  • Structured routines help improve self-regulation, wellbeing, growth, and academic achievement
  • Predictable routines create a positive learning environment where students feel ready to engage.

At Kingswood College, our strategic plan prioritises implementing a sequenced, evidence-informed teaching and learning strategy to maximize student growth and achievement.

In 2025, Class Routines have been introduced across Years 7–12 to provide a structured and supportive learning environment.

While routines may vary by subject, all students will experience a standardised entry and exit routine. This includes beginning each class with an ‘Activate’ Task, designed to reinforce learning through multiple exposure techniques. These techniques give students repeated opportunities to engage with and deepen their understanding of new concepts and skills.

A key component of the Kingswood College Class Routines approach is fostering a safe and supportive learning environment. Staff have implemented the use of ‘classroom voices’ to promote a calm and focused atmosphere.

Throughout the year, secondary staff will continue refining and embedding these practices as part of a broader teaching and learning framework. This collaborative effort ensures that class routines remain responsive to student needs while reinforcing high-impact teaching strategies that support engagement and achievement.
