Learning Beyond The Classroom
By Chrissy Gamble, Principal
When I think back on all of things that we do at Kingswood College, some of the most powerful moments didn’t take place inside a classroom at all. They happened on dusty red earth in Central Australia, on windswept locations on the coast, and in countless sports fields, art studios, and co-curricular options across our campus. These moments that occur outside the traditional academic timetable enable our students to discover just as much about themselves as they do about the world.
In launching our strategic plan this year, we made a conscious decision to elevate our co-curricular and enrichment programs, recognising that education is as much about shaping character, values, and resilience as it is about academic success. Our Central Australia program gives our students the chance to connect with Indigenous culture and history in a deeply personal way. They don’t just read about the stories of the land, they stand where those stories began.
Alongside these experiences, we have broadened opportunities in sport, the arts, and leadership. The range and quality of these programs have expanded significantly, and so too has student participation. Research consistently shows that students engaged in co-curricular activities demonstrate greater resilience, stronger social skills, and improved academic performance. A 2022 Frontiers in Education study confirmed that involvement in such activities is linked to better problem-solving abilities, higher motivation, and a stronger sense of belonging at school.
What excites me most is seeing the growth in confidence these opportunities create. I have watched students who were hesitant to try new things step forward into leadership roles on camp. I’ve seen the pride on the faces of students performing in the arts, knowing they’ve shared something uniquely their own. I’ve seen athletes demonstrate teamwork that goes far beyond the scoreboard. These are the experiences that shape future leaders, being adaptable, empathetic, and ready to face challenges.
Our aim is to continue building these opportunities, so every student finds a pathway that excites and challenges them. We want each student to discover not only what they are capable of but also how their skills can contribute to something greater than themselves.
Thank you for supporting these programs through your encouragement, your trust, and your willingness to let your children step into the unknown. Those moments outside the classroom are shaping who they are, and that is education in its truest form.
