Learning Through The Stumbles

We often learn the most about ourselves not in moments of ease, but in the quiet that follows when something’s gone wrong.

As adults, we know how tempting it can be to avoid mistakes, to protect our pride, our plans, and our sense of control. But when we think about the moments that have shaped our character most, they’re rarely the perfect ones. It’s the setbacks, the unexpected detours, and the uncomfortable truths that teach us resilience. These moments remind us of what really matters and help clarify our values.

One thing that’s been on my mind recently is how often we, with the best of intentions, try to shield our children from those very same growing pains. We smooth the road, we step in to fix, we offer comfort that sometimes crosses over into rescue. And of course we do, we love them deeply, and we want them to thrive.

But if our children never stumble, how will they learn how to get back up?

Challenges come in many forms for young people: falling short of a goal, making a mistake in an assessment, navigating disappointment, or not quite knowing where they fit socially. Friendship struggles, in particular, can feel especially raw. And yet, these are the very experiences that help children develop empathy, conflict resolution, self-awareness, and emotional strength.

True confidence doesn’t come from everything going right. It comes from getting a few things wrong, feeling deeply, and discovering that you can recover.

At Kingswood College, we believe in walking alongside students through these moments. Not to remove the struggle, but to support them within it, with patience, love, perspective, and care. And in partnership with you, their families, we can help nurture young people who are not only kind and capable, but resilient and wise.
