Personalised Learning That's Making A Difference

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is seeing the spark in a student’s eyes when learning truly connects with them. Through the implementation of our strategic plan, we have taken bold steps to make sure that moment happens more often for every student.

Our introduction of flexible streaming in Mathematics across the school, alongside English and Mathematics for Prep to Year 6, has been a significant shift in how we approach learning. Instead of grouping students strictly by age, we consider their current level of understanding and readiness. This allows us to match each learner with the right challenge. This is a concept supported by decades of educational research into differentiated instruction.

For students who are ready to move ahead, it means they can explore more advanced content without being held back by pacing. For those who need more time or a different approach, it means they get targeted teaching without feeling left behind. Research confirms that such targeted grouping, especially in smaller classes, boosts not only academic outcomes but also student confidence and engagement. The Education Endowment Foundation in the UK has found that even reducing class sizes by just five students can mean months of extra learning each year, particularly in the early years.

At Kingswood College, our commitment to small class sizes is unwavering. While many schools are moving towards 28 or more students per class, we remain committed to keeping our numbers lower, because we know it allows teachers to truly know each child: their strengths, their challenges, and their potential. Smaller classes mean teachers can adapt lessons on the spot, provide more detailed feedback, and spend time nurturing those “lightbulb moments” that are so crucial to learning.

Already, we are seeing encouraging signs. Our academic results are trending upwards, which is a testament not only to our dedicated staff but also to the support and trust we receive from our families. More importantly, we see students approaching challenges with confidence, asking deeper questions, and taking ownership of their learning. These are skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

The journey is ongoing, and we will continue to refine our approach based on both data, the science of learning and the lived experience of our students and teachers. My hope is that every Kingswood student will leave our college with the confidence that they have been truly seen, known, and supported in their learning journey.

Thank you for walking alongside us as we continue to build an environment where every student can truly shine.
