The Power of Data in Monitoring Student Growth and Progress

By Chrissy Gamble, Principal

At Kingswood College, we are deeply committed to celebrating student success, and the effective use of data is a crucial element of this commitment. Under our Bold Expectations strategic pillar, we prioritise data-informed practices to monitor student growth and progress, ensuring that every student receives the support and challenge they need to thrive. However, as Dr. Selena Fisk insightfully asks,

"Does data have a PR problem?"

Dr. Fisk highlights that while data can be an incredibly powerful tool, many people are hesitant to engage with it due to past negative experiences or a lack of confidence in working with numbers.

As she explains, "Many people face challenges when trying to understand and use data in a way that truly makes an impact, and this can sometimes make them resistant to using data in their practice."

To overcome these challenges, we are striving to cultivate a culture where data is seen not as something to fear but as a means of celebrating achievements and informing great practice. Dr. Fisk suggests several strategies to help shift perceptions of data, and these align closely with our approach at Kingswood College:

  1. Ground conversations in the 'why': Data is not about monitoring individuals; it is about understanding our students’ learning journeys and evaluating the impact of our teaching.
  2. Celebrate achievements: Too often, data is viewed through a deficit lens. We must also use it to highlight progress and growth, acknowledging the incredible efforts of our students and teachers.
  3. Provide ongoing support and learning: Just as we scaffold student learning, we must also provide teachers with the tools and training they need to feel confident in using data effectively.
  4. Embrace transparency: Ensuring open access to data builds trust and enables collaborative problem-solving rather than fostering skepticism or concern.
  5. Practice what we preach: If we use data to refine our teaching practices and celebrate growth, rather than as a punitive measure, we reinforce its positive value within our College community.

By embedding these principles into our daily routines, we are building a school culture where data empowers both students and educators. Our commitment to Bold Expectations means that we do not settle for assumptions—we use evidence to guide and enhance the learning experience for every student.

As Dr. Fisk reminds us, "As we navigate the complexities of data in our modern world, let's strive to make it not just a tool but a positive force that celebrates and inspires growth." That is exactly what we are striving for at Kingswood College.
