There's Something Special about Open Day

May 8, 2026 12:00 AM

There’s something special about Open Day. It offers a window into who we are, not just through what we say, but through what people experience, notice and feel. As I moved around the College on Saturday, speaking with current families, prospective parents, students and staff, I had a chance to reflect on what I continue to learn about our community.

Here are ten things Open Day reminded me:

1. People feel it when they walk in

There is a warmth here that is hard to manufacture and impossible to miss. Visitors often comment on our 'vibe' and the genuine sense of welcome, and on Saturday that feeling was everywhere.

2. Our students are our greatest ambassadors

Whether leading tours, performing, or simply engaging in conversation, our students spoke with authenticity and pride. They don’t just talk about their school, they love it.

3. Staff care deeply and it shows

In classrooms, on tours, and in casual conversations, our staff demonstrated not only their expertise, but their commitment to knowing and supporting each student. It’s the kind of care that builds trust over time.

4. Learning here is alive

From hands-on activities to thoughtful discussions, there was a clear sense that learning at our College is active, engaging and purposeful.

5. There is no single ‘type’ of student or family who belongs here

Our strength lies in our diversity. Students and families with different interests, strengths and personalities all find their place, and that inclusivity is one of our greatest assets.

6. Families are looking for partnership

Many of the conversations I had centered on connection, on how we work together, communicate and support young people. It reinforced that education is at its best when it is a shared journey.

7. Our co-curricular program matters

Music, sport, the arts and clubs weren’t just on display, they were being experienced. These opportunities are not extras; they are essential to developing confident, well-rounded young people.

8. Tradition and progress can sit side by side

There is a strong sense of history and pride in our College, but also a clear commitment to evolving and improving. That balance is something we should never take for granted.

9. Community is built in the small moments

A smile at the gate, a student helping a visitor, a teacher taking time to answer a question: these moments might seem small, but together they define who we are.

10. We have something truly special

Perhaps the most important reflection of all. Open Day is a reminder not just of what we do, but of who we are and why it matters.

Thank you to our staff, students and families who gave their time, energy and spirit to make the day such a success. You represented our College with pride, and it did not go unnoticed.

Moments like these remind me just how fortunate we are to be part of this exceptional community.
