By Chrissy Gamble, Principal

At Kingswood College, the safety and wellbeing of every child is at the heart of what we do. As part of our commitment to the Child Safe Standards, this article focuses on Child Safe Standard 5: Equity and Diverse Needs. This standard ensures that we actively recognise, support, and respond to the diverse circumstances of children and young people.

Creating an Inclusive and Safe Environment

To comply with Child Safe Standard 5, Kingswood College ensures that:

  • Understanding Diverse Circumstances (5.1): Staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge to support children from diverse backgrounds, including those who are at increased risk of harm.
  • Access to Information and Support (5.2): We are able to provide children and young people with culturally safe, accessible, and understandable information on support services and complaint processes.
  • Targeted Support for Vulnerable Children (5.3): We pay particular attention to the needs of children with disabilities, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, children unable to live at home, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+.
  • Culturally Safe Environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children (5.4): We foster an environment that respects and promotes culture and identity.

Taking Action to Support Vulnerable Children

We take proactive steps to understand the diverse needs of the children in our community, ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and heard. Our actions include:

  • Providing staff training on identifying and responding to factors that may increase a child’s vulnerability.
  • Establishing clear equity and inclusion expectations across our community.
  • Ensuring that children’s voices are heard, with accessible ways for them to seek support and report concerns.
  • Actively promoting cultural safety and respect, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Upholding Equity and Respect for All

At Kingswood College, we believe that every child deserves to be safe, respected, and supported. By embedding the principles of Child Safe Standard 5 in our daily practices, we reaffirm our commitment to equity, inclusion, and child safety in everything we do. We encourage all members of our community—students, families, and staff—to engage in ongoing conversations about child safety and to reach out if they have concerns or need support.

Together, we continue to build a culture where every child can thrive.
