Are You OK?
“Are you okay?” Three little words. Perhaps some of the most important words we can say to a child.
Life can be wonderfully busy. We ask about homework, sport, friends, assessments, rehearsals, assignments and everything that needs to happen next. Sometimes, in all that busyness, we can forget to simply stop and check in. Are you okay? And when we ask, we need to be ready to listen.
Our children are growing up in a world that is changing at extraordinary speed. Technology and artificial intelligence are now part of their everyday lives, and from 2027 Victorian schools will place greater emphasis on purposeful technology use, including more device-free learning.
At Kingswood, this isn’t about stepping away from technology. It is about helping our young people develop the judgement to know when technology helps, when it distracts and when something much more important can happen without it. A conversation. A book. A walk. A laugh. A moment of quiet. A child looking up from a screen and talking to someone who is really listening.
That's what I love most about those three words: Are you okay? They don’t require an app, an algorithm or an answer. They simply require us to stop for a moment, look up and notice someone. And sometimes, that is exactly what young people need.
So this week, let's all find a moment and ask. Then pause long enough to hear the answer.
At Kingswood College we proudly work to fulfil our vision to embolden hearts and inspire minds in a nurturing environment, on land that holds deep cultural significance to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge and honour their Elders, past and present, and extend our respect to all First Nations people. Whenever we gather, and wherever we gather, we extend respect and dignity to the first inhabitants of our country and acknowledge the truth about the country on which our school has stood and now stands.
