Child Safe Standard 8: Staff and Volunteer Training

At Kingswood College, our unwavering commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children is embedded in every aspect of our operations. Child Safe Standard 8 focuses on ensuring that all staff and volunteers are not only aware of their responsibilities, but are actively trained and supported to implement them effectively.

This Standard outlines the minimum training and support requirements for everyone working with children in a school setting. It emphasises the importance of ongoing education and a shared understanding of how to keep children safe.

What does this look like at Kingswood College?

1. Training on the Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
All staff undertake training on the College’s Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy. This training is part of our induction process and is revisited to ensure everyone understands their role in creating a safe environment.

2. Recognising indicators of harm
We provide specific training that enables staff and volunteers to recognise signs of child abuse or harm, including harm caused by other children and young people. Early identification is a key component of prevention.

3. Responding to child safety concerns
Staff are equipped with the knowledge and strategies to respond appropriately when child safety concerns arise. This includes understanding internal and external reporting processes, supporting colleagues and children who disclose harm, and notifying families and carers where appropriate.

4. Culturally safe environments
Cultural safety is an essential aspect of child wellbeing. Kingswood staff receive training on how to build inclusive, respectful environments that recognise and celebrate diversity. This includes an understanding of the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families, as well as children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Our approach to implementation

Child safety is not a one-time conversation. It’s an ongoing commitment. At Kingswood College, we believe that a well-informed and supported staff is fundamental to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for all students.

We thank our community for working with us to uphold these high standards of care and accountability.
