The Impact of Great Teaching

Jun 27, 2025 12:05 AM

By Chrissy Gamble, Principal

One of the most significant influences on a young person’s learning isn’t technology, facilities, or even class size. It’s the quality of their teacher. This isn’t just a hunch. It’s backed by decades of research.

Professor John Hattie’s extensive meta-analysis identifies teacher expertise as one of the most powerful drivers of student progress. His work highlights the importance of teacher-student relationships, teacher clarity, feedback, and collective teacher efficacy. Put simply, great teachers change lives. Hattie’s research shows that when teachers collaborate, challenge one another, and continually reflect on their impact, student outcomes accelerate. This aligns with other large-scale studies, including those by Dylan Wiliam and Robert Marzano, who highlight the importance of formative assessment, high expectations, and a deep understanding of how students learn.

At Kingswood College, we are fortunate to have an exceptional team of educators who are committed not only to teaching well but to growing in their practice. Our teachers engage in ongoing professional learning, use data to refine their approaches, and work together to ensure every student is seen, challenged, and supported.

It’s easy to think that great teaching is about content. In truth, it’s also about connection, adaptability, insight, and inspiration. It’s about teachers who embolden hearts and inspire minds.

As the term draws to a close, I encourage you to take a moment to reach out to your child’s teachers. A simple message of thanks can go a long way in recognising the dedication, care, and energy they bring to their work every day. Our teachers do an incredible job, and your appreciation means more than you might realise.

And…as a parent, the trust you place in your child’s teachers is one of the most powerful partnerships we share. Rest assured that as a school, we remain committed to investing in our staff because the research is clear. Great teachers are the difference.
